The Witcher | First days of The Witcher in Spain

The filming of Netflix’s The Witcher, a new series that features Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, are at full blast.

If you follow the media related to PHC, then you saw the news about the cast in the Canary Islands over the past few weeks.

But what sort of inspiration does this place give to the producers of The Witcher?

The Canary Islands are an archipelago south of Spain, close to the Portuguese island of Madeira. They belong to Spain although they are located closer to Morocco, in Northern Africa.

Provinces

There are seven islands, belonging to one of the two major provinces: Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas (each capital city is named after its respective province).

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Formed by the islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands.

This is where many famous touristic spots are located, such as the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, the Teide Astronomic Observatory and the El Teide volcano, 3.718 metres above the sea level, making it the world’s third largest volcano and highest point in Spain and in all of the Atlantic islands.

The easiest way to get there is flying, as there are daily direct flights from Madrid.

The website “Eu ando pelo mundo” (I wander through the world, in English) described Tenerife as an island that “possesses an unmistakable colonial architecture and an impressive cultural diversity, a mix of Europe, Africa and Latin America. This means spectacular cuisine and very particular folk festivities. Tenerife ‘s carnival is one of world’s greatest, second only to Rio de Janeiro’s, according to them.”

La Gomera is home to Garajonay National Park, UNESCO’s World Heritage since 1986, and the beaches of Tapahuga and Playa del Medio.

El Hierro, further south, has La Estaca port and an airport. In fact, all the islands have airports, where flights coming from Spain and abroad land every day.

Las Palmas

The Las Palmas province is constituted by the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Ile of Wolves and the archipelago of Chinijo, formed by the islands of Graciosa and Alegranza.

From Gran Canaria, the third largest island in the archipelago, it is possible to see the Pico de las Nieves, standing 1949 metres above sea level, and the beaches of Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas.

Fuerteventura, only 100 km off the coast of Morocco, has many ancient volcanoes, a must-see for the tourists.

Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, and it is shaped with volcanoes, craters and great lava rivers. Its main touristic spot is the Timanfaya National Park.

The archipelago of Chinijo is formed by the islands of Graciosa (the only one still inhabited), Alegranza and other smaller islands.

The Lobos Island is only 2 km away from Fuerteventura. It is part of the Lobos Island National Park and was named after its very diverse vegetation and for being home to many sea wolves.

The movie sets

With a wide array of locations, Netflix’s new series promises to deliver stunning natural landscapes.

The ones featured on the photos issued by the local press in Spain are:

Roque Nublo – a volcanic rock in Tejeda, in the Gran Canaria island. It is 67m tall and its peak stands 1813 metres above sea level.

Actress Anya Chalotra (Yenefer) and other cast members can be seen on this set.

Maspalomas Dunes – protected by the Government of the Canary Islands as a special natural reserve, its 400 hectares include a beach, a field of organic sand dunes, a palm tree forest and a brackish water lagoon (saltier than fresh water but not as salty as seawater).

The production of The Witcher also shot some scenes over there.

The landscapes of Cuevas Blancas, in Valsequillo, and Redondo de Guayedra, in Agaete, also welcomed part of the cast and the website Canarias7 published a few scenes.

Henry Cavill still has not yet been seen there but he is definitely in Spain.

And that was just the first week. According to the local press, the cast and producers are supposed to stay in La Palma for two more weeks, but more of that on the next issue of Kingdom of Rivia.

Stay tuned with PHC and our social medias to know everything about The Witcher, featuring Henry Cavill.
